I don't want to die again but more importantly, I don't want to watch you die again.[break][break]

They've lost so much. It feels cruel to dangle them over this edge.[break][break]

Yet Rocket demands, and Cillian will forever comply.[break][break]

It's easier, this time, to shake off the terrible pull calling them into the darkness.[break][break]

Everyone falls through and lands in a decrepit underground hall. The walls feature engravings of what appear to be Unown. One wall spells out a message through the Symbol Pokemon's depicted bodies: the more there is, the less you see.[break][break]

Unable to find the right words to express his appreciation for his husband's company through an experience they'd both dread, Cillian only offers a weak smile that fades as the floor begins to crack and crumble beneath them.[break][break]

It wasn't drowning, but the underground hall was Temp's worst nightmare. Cillian doesn't try to escape, this time, instead sticking to his husband's side throughout so that they won't be separated as they're plunged into the space below.[break][break]

"Who?" Cillian asks. "The Triad?"[break][break]

Rocket?[break][break]

"The Unown?"[break][break]

His neck prickles. He is thinking not of the simulation but of the chilling gaze of declan walsh. Don't disappoint me.[break][break]

"I don't know," he admits, as their footsteps echo through this eerie place. Darkness his mind answers to the riddle on the wall, and the simulation around them starts to shift.

He doesn't speak again until they're in that space between scenarios, that brief moment.[break][break]

He offers a shaky smile, humorless, and a pointed look.[break][break]

He says to you: "fuschia has already fallen. nothing you accomplish here will be of any worth."[break][break]

Should you attempt to step toward him, you'll knock into an invisible wall: an intriguing puzzle for gym challengers, but a frustrating conundrum for those attempting to engage with him.[break][break]

"i'll strike you down before you can even perceive the real me."[break][break]

Suddenly, Walsh disappears. Throughout the gym, multiple "Walshes" appear behind invisible walls. Periodically, he will lunge from a secret space with his GLISCOR, NIDOKING, &/OR HYPNO to attempt to slay you and your Pokemon.

Whoever's worse.[break][break]

More than the Triad or the ever-watchful Unown, it is fear of Rocket that dominates Cillian's psyche. And as if he'd infected the simulation with that very thought, they find themselves in Fuschia as it burns.[break][break]

"I remember this..."[break][break]

Not this exact moment or place, but the very day that Fuschia had fallen.[break][break]

Walsh confronts them, and Cillian frowns at his likeness.[break][break]

"We're on your side," he insists, but the simulation seems not to care as a Nidoking's EARTHQUAKE fights to bring them to their knees. Crouching on instinct, one hand braced against the crumbling gym floor, Cillian finds it difficult to confront the Rocket Boss even in theory. Even when their lives are in danger. Years of conditioning to submit, serve, obey override other instincts.[break][break]

He hesitates, eyes wide.[break][break]

The outcome would be in Temp's hands.

Not in the same way that Cillian Quinn had. But this scene, this way. With Lulu Flint, they had chosen to fight.[break][break]

Tempest glances over at husband and feels a pang of sympathy. Rocket had beaten something important out of him. Something Temp hadn't even realized was missing until after the Twenty Year Memory.[break][break]

A Gliscor aims for them.[break][break]

Tempest doesn't hesitate before standing in front of the other.[break][break]

He levels his eyes on Walsh in a challenge. Flames burning within. This is not the reckless abandon of a man with a death wish. It is someone who was a shield for his people offering support to the person he loved the most.[break][break]

"He won't listen to reason in this one. We should retreat."[break][break]

Battling him wouldn't be worth the effort in this one.

Cillian doesn't, can't fight back.[break][break]

Only Temp's stalwart presence would save him if this were reality, but Walsh still manages to gain the upper hand in their retreat.[break][break]

Cillian's fingers adopt a subtle tremor as the Rocket Boss gloats.[break][break]

Only when Walsh leaves does he come back to himself, shame and self-loathing replacing the fear that had crippled him. His hands still shake, and he curls them into fists. He remembers the freedom of Galar and wants to cry.[break][break]

Instead, he takes a bracing breath. Remember what you are.[break][break]

Obedient. Blind. Safe in subservience.[break][break]

Wordless, he folds himself into Tempest Quinn's arms as the scene around them shifts.

Cillian Quinn falls into his arms and Tempest holds him like a treasure. Something worth protecting, something precious, something that deserves it. Because, for what it mattered to Tempest in the grand scheme of things- Cillian did. Cillian was a man who had ruined lives. Had done terrible things in war. Who sat on a throne of bones and broken dreams to be where he was today. Cillian Quinn was a force of nature with the power of a titan backing him, shaping him into something more.[break][break]

Tempest was just a human.[break][break]

That didn't matter in the end. Cillian was so important to Temp for none of the reasons most people cared about. Tempest loved his smile, and his laugh, and how his face was soft with sleep, how when he first woke up there was always that one little cowlick that liked to stick up. Cillian was a warm hand to hold when it was cold, someone to share a blanket with, someone to curl against after a long day. Cillian was so much to so many people- but no one got to see the sides of him that Tempest did, that made Cillian human too.[break][break]

Tempest would stand in the way of anything that dared to take that away from the two of them.[break][break]

Seeing the other so defeated only resolved this with even more vigor in his chest.[break][break]

"The new scenario is about to start." He whispers, too soon, when the world starts to fade around them.
